| Further Fig StudyBy Kelly |
I completed another of my Fig little quiltlets today. Since I decided that my final quilt (which will be made up of all the little quiltlets from the study) will be the Life of a Fig, the one today is Baby Figs on a Branch.
I cut out the branch, leaves and figs from fabric with MistyFuse on the back. I had some green with purple paintsticks on a circular rubbing plate which I though would emphasize the roundness of the figs. All bits are ironed on the hand dyed blue "sky"
I wanted to experiment with making depth and light from where I placed the light portions of the fabric in the design. The sun is shining on the smallest leaf to the right and the end of the main fig on the branch. Besides color of the fabric, I also wanted to see what difference stitching and thread color would make in the overall effect. To make the fig and leaves that I wanted in the foreground more noticable, I did a satin stitch around them with a light and a medium green thread and a medium purple thread. The branch, top leaf and partial figs are outlined with an offset zigzag stitch to see if the would recede a bit. All this was done with lightweight interfacing on the back of the blue piece.
Then I added the batting and backing. I stitched around the leaves to quilt them to the backing. Then I wanted to try another new quilting stitch for the overall background. It is kinda like a straight line/points meandering -- sort of. It has a name I just can't remember it right now.
So, anyway, here it is -- Baby Figs on a Branch
